Popular Baby Names

It appears that my given name is in sharp decline, at least according to The Baby Name Wizard’s NameVoyager. It peaked at 399th most popular baby name in the 80’s and has since plummeted to 818th in 2003. I guess that’s fine by me. Look for a surge of Jacobs and Emilys entering preschool in the fall.

The NameVoyager is a very clever way to visualize the trends in naming over the past 100 years. As James Drogan asks on his great blog droganbloggin, what new insights might this sort of thing provide? Any expecting parents care to comment?

By the way, check out James’s comment to yesterday’s CG post. I like it a lot, especially the following line (which also happens to be law): For most of us claiming to be generalists, our claim to perfect knowledge must be that we know what we know, know what we don’t know, and know who knows what we don’t know.
